Arthur Hellyer trained as a nurseryman, moving into journalism in 1929 when he became assistant editor of Commercial Horticulture and then Amateur Gardening.
From 1946 to 1967, Hellyer was editor of Amateur Gardener. In addition, until thelate-1980s he wrote or edited some 60 books. He was a regular contributor to magazines such as The Garden, Country Life and Homes and Gardens.
