Joynes was Vanbrugh’s Clerk of Works in the building of Blenheim from 1705–15 and who, in the latter year, went on to succeed Nicholas Hawksmoor as the Clerk of the Works at Kensington Palace, where he remained employed throughout the building of Linley.
