Who was Henry Shapland Colt?
Henry Shapland Colt, also known as Harry, was a golf course architect and designer active in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Colt was educated at Monkton Combe School near Bath and took a law degree at Clare College, Cambridge.
Life and work
He was born on 4 August 1869, in Bishopwood House, Highgate, London, England the son of barrister, George Nathaniel Colt and his wife, Georgiana Ellen Bruce. He died at St Amand's House, East Hendred, Berkshire, England on 21 November 1951.
He worked predominantly with Charles Alison, John Morrison, and Alister MacKenzie, and participated in the design or redesign of over 300 golf courses (115 on his own) in all six inhabited continents, including those at Wentworth Club, Sunningdale, Muirfield, Royal Portrush, and Royal Liverpool.
