Who was Henry Trevor?
Henry Trevor was a wealthy Norwich merchant and cabinet maker who established the Plantation Gardens in Norwich over a 40 year period between 1857-1897.
Life and work
The garden combined Gothic and Italianate features, created with local flints and ornamental bricks, and an outstanding array of plants. After his retirement Trevor opened his family garden for charity. Plantation Garden is a 3 acre Grade II English Heritage registered garden established over 100 years ago in an abandoned chalk quarry, 600 yards from the city centre.
After Henry’s death in 1897, the Plantation House and Garden lease was sold to successive tenants. By 1930s the Plantation House had become a private nursing home. The gardens fell into disrepair after WW2, but it has since been restored by The Plantation Garden Preservation Trust, who continue to maintain and improve the garden for current and future generations to enjoy.
