Who was Herbert Luck North?

Herbert Luck North, was an architect, he was born in Leicester in 1871.

Life and work

He was educated at Uppingham School and Jesus College, Cambridge where he took his BA. After studying at Jesus College, Cambridge, he was articled as an architect in London, following which he worked as an assistant to William Alfred Pite (1860-1949) and to Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869-1944).

In 1897 he married Maude Davis with whom he had one daughter. He moved north at the beginning of the 20th century to set up a practice and build a home in Lllanfairfechen. There he became interested in the buildings of Snowdonia. His published works include The Old Churches of Arllechwedd (1906).

Between 1898-1912 North exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and at the Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, Wales. North was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1905.

He died on 9 February 1941, at the time of his death he was living at Wern Isa, Llanfairfechan, Caernarvonshire.
