Who was Horatio Herbert Kitchener?
Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener was a British Army officer and colonial administrator. Kitchener was born in Ballylongford near Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland.
Life and work
Kitchener began his overseas career with the British army in Egypt and Sudan in 1892. Following service in South Africa (1900-1902) and India (1902-1909), in 1909 Earl Kitchener was made Field Marshal and, at the outbreak of World War 1, was appointed Secretary State of War. He was killed during a diplomatic mission to Russia in 1916.
