John Smythson, mason, and son of Robert Smythson, worked as a mason at Wollaton Hall, Nottinghamshire. He purused a similar career as his father and worked in the service of the Cavendish family. In particular Smythson was involved in the rebuilding of Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire, between 1612 and his death in 1634.
