Who was Richard Shackleton Pope?
Richard Shackleton Pope was an architect active during the 19th century.
Life and Work
He was born in 1793 (or 1791 according to some sources) and spent much of his working life in Bristol. Among other buildings, he worked on the Royal Western Hotel, in conjunction with Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Pope's early work includes the Grecian Magistrates' Court in Corn Street of 1829 and the Wool Hall, St. Thomas' Street of 1828-30, as well as Bush House.
He was District Surveyor for the City of Bristol from 1831 to 1872.
