Who was Richard Wilson?
Richard Wilson was born in Penegoes, Montgomeryshire. was an influential Welsh landscape painter, who worked in Britain and Italy. He has been described as the ‘Father of British Landscape painting’.
Life and Work
From 1750 to 1757 he lived in Italy where he began painting landscapes. Upon his return to England he founded the first Society of Artists and then the Royal Academy of Art.
Among Wilson's pupils was the painter Thomas Jones.
His last year was spent at Colomendy Hall, Denbighshire, where he died on 15 May 1782, and is buried in the grounds of St Mary's Church, Mold, Flintshire.
