Thomas Leversidge Fish bought The Knowle, Sidmouth in 1821 and spent lavish amounts of money on the house and gardens until his death in 1861. His additions included an ornate verandah, fountain, aviary, grand arch decorated with conch shells, summerhouse, shell grotto, fernery, Italian garden, rosary, vinery, cascade, and many rare plants and trees including fir palm, fan palm, myrtles and camphor.
