William Privett of Chilmark was a stonemason. He built and carved the stone details of many of the garden buildings at Stourhead, Wiltshire, including the grotto (1740), the obelisk (1748), the bridge (1749), the Temple of Hercules (1753) and the Palladian Temple (1755).
He also carved a number of features for the garden at Longford Castle, Wiltshire, including the obelisk (1742) and the summerhouse (1743).
